What do you get when you combine over 700 adoptable pets, Mr. Met, dogs flying over kids, and a GoPro? Thousands of smiles... and hello Pet Adoption Month!
This past weekend I traveled to Port Washington, NY - home of our Helping Paws partner North Shore Animal League America - for their 21st annual #PetAdoptathon, which kicks off World Wide Pet Adoption Month with over 2,000 partnering shelters across the globe!
I arrived early on the opening morning to meet some of the staff and set up in the activities tent - filled with face painting, balloon artists, the Cosmos pro soccer team, Purina's Incredible Dog arial performance team, concessions, games, and a bunch of other fun for the dog-lover. Pretty darn impressive for a pet adoption event I thought to myself.
Before the event opening at 9:00, I decided to take a walk outside - GoPro in hand - to catch a little footage. I was amazed! There was a line that stretched down and around the parking lot of patrons waiting for their chance to enter. That was over a couple football fields worth of people waiting to adopt pets! the earliest of them had been waiting before 3:00 A.M.! Incredible. I have never seen anything quite like it.
Gates opened. Sun broke through. Food Trucks. Radio stations. Mr. Met greetings and pictures. Smiles abound!
An amazing army of staff and volunteers worked around the clock for 36 hrs to foster hundreds upon hundreds of new forever homes, happy families and a phenomenally fun event for all!
